Tighter building envelopes for U.S. homes have made poor indoor air quality (IAQ) a growing health concern. One effective way to combat indoor air pollution is to lower the concentration levels. We at TitanZ Plumbing & Air Conditioning recommend UV lights in Sarasota, FL, to control the presence of pathogens. You can have us maintain and repair your ductwork to avoid air leakage. Our HVAC technicians also install whole-house fans that add fresh air, thereby diluting pollutants. Premium filters can trap particulate matter while ensuring optimal HVAC efficiency, and air scrubbers can catch even more pollutants and contaminants.
Traditional air purifiers neutralize some pathogens but typically not enough to make a significant difference. It’s why our team recommends ultraviolet (UV) lights. U.S. hospitals and government and military facilities have long used ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI). UVGI is an effective way to neutralize over 99% of pathogens on surfaces and in water and air. How it works is that a lamp emits UV-C, which is a germicidal light. The longer the exposure, the more effective the sanitization.
There are three core types of UV lights for HVAC applications: air, coil, and condensate pan sanitizing. Air sanitizing is the most common for IAQ purposes, and we’ll install them in the ducts of a central system. Coil sanitizing systems help to keep your air conditioner or heat pump evaporator coil free of microbial growth. Condensate pan sanitizing units are similar but situated near the drip pan.
All HVAC systems have one or more air filters. That filtration serves two purposes: to keep the HVAC equipment clean and efficient and to improve IAQ. Avoid replacing filters in Sarasota on a set schedule. Instead, inspect them at least once a month, and replace them when they’re visibly dirty.
Consider investing in a high-quality filter. A thicker filter, for instance, may cost more initially but can last a lot longer since it won’t saturate as quickly. Another factor to think about is MERV or minimum efficiency reporting value. Cheap filters often have a rating between MERV 1-4. Most systems can support at least MERV 8, and many can support MERV 13 and beyond. That level of filtration can make a dramatic difference in the presence of airborne household allergens.
A MERV 13 filter will remove at least 90% of these household allergens that pass through it.

If you’d like an even more active form of filtration, we recommend air scrubbers. These are in-duct air purification systems that filter conditioned air just before it reaches your living spaces. Such systems often have a HEPA or high-efficiency particulate air filter to trap even more than a MERV filter can. They also often have activated carbon to remove odors, gases, airborne chemicals, and so forth.
You should control your relative humidity, and both dehumidifiers and humidifiers can be excellent complements to air scrubbers. The recommended RH range for homes is 30-50%. A whole-house dehumidifier will help you lower high RH in summer. A whole-house humidifier will help you increase low RH in summer.
