Sewer Line Problems & What You Can Do About Them

It is important to be able to recognize the signs of sewer line problems so that you can address the issue before they become a catastrophe.

The following signs can indicate that there is a problem with your sewer line

  • Flooding in your lawn nor around your home’s foundation
  • Foul odor
  • Gurgling noises coming from your drains or pipes
  • Low water level in your toilets
  • Sewage back up in your toilets, bathtubs, or sinks
  • Significantly greener grass around your sewer lines
  • Slowly draining or clogged drains

Any of the signs listed above is indicative of a problem with your sewer lines. This can be a major problem for you and your home, especially if not addressed quickly.

Sewer line problems like leaks can be caused by things such as aging pipes, tree root intrusions, blockages, or extreme weather conditions. Everything that goes down your drain has the potential to cause a problem within your sewer line. It can be costly to replace your sewer line, so it is important to conduct routine maintenance and inspections in order to avoid large problems.

How Can I Prevent Sewer Line Issues in My Home?

Preventing sewer line problems starts with proper maintenance and mindful usage. Here are some tips:

  • Avoid flushing non-degradable items: Products like wipes, paper towels, and hygiene products can cause severe clogs.
  • Be cautious with grease: Never pour cooking grease or oil down the drain as it solidifies and blocks the pipes.
  • Schedule regular inspections: Routine sewer inspections can detect potential issues early, saving you time and money in the long run.

Our team at TitanZ Plumbing & Air Conditioning offers affordable maintenance plans to keep your sewer lines in top condition.

What Causes Sewer Line Problems?

Sewer line problems can arise from a variety of causes, including:

  • Tree Root Intrusion: Roots from nearby trees or shrubs can grow into sewer lines, causing blockages, leaks, or cracks.
  • Clogs and Blockages: Accumulation of grease, food debris, hair, soap scum, and other materials can restrict flow.
  • Pipe Corrosion or Deterioration: Older sewer pipes, especially those made from cast iron or clay, can corrode or deteriorate over time.
  • Shifting Soil or Ground Movement: Natural shifts in the ground, caused by soil erosion, earthquakes, or heavy construction, can misalign or break pipes.
  • Improper Installation: Poorly installed or poorly designed sewer lines can lead to uneven slopes or weak connections.
  • Aging Pipes: Sewer lines made from older materials, such as clay or Orangeburg pipes, have a limited lifespan and may fail with age.
  • Heavy Rain or Flooding: Excessive water from heavy rains can overwhelm sewer systems, causing backups and increased pressure on pipes.
  • Flushing Non-Flushable Items: Items like wipes, feminine hygiene products, paper towels, and other non-biodegradable materials can clog lines.
  • Cracks or Breaks in the Pipe: Physical damage caused by construction, digging, or vehicle weight above the line can result in cracks or breaks.
  • Grease Build-Up: Pouring grease or oil down drains can cause it to solidify in pipes, leading to blockages over time.

Regular maintenance, inspections, and mindful usage of your plumbing system can help prevent many of these problems.

Inspecting & Repairing Your Sewer Line

In order to determine whether you are having a problem with your sewer line, our team will conduct a variety of tests. For example, we may use a video camera inspection of your line, which involves putting a small camera down your pipes to look for any signs of leaks, blockages, or other damage. We can also conduct tests like hydrostatic testing, which involves plugging your sewer line on one side and filling the pipes with water. This can help us detect leaks or other damage that we can’t see on camera. Similarly, we can do a smoke test, which, like the hydrostatic testing, can show where cracks or leaks are within your pipes. Once we’ve found the source of the problem, we can get to work fixing your sewer line.

Repairing your sewer line may involve digging a trench near the area of the breakage in your line in order to remove the damaged section and replace the pipe. Another repair option is trenchless sewer repair, which involves special materials to reline the inside of your pipes, creating a smooth and secure lining within your pipe.

No matter what you need, TitanZ Plumbing & Air Conditioning has a solution for your sewer problems. Call (941) 541-5508 today for a free estimate!
